Album Info:Photos taken of the BNSF Transfer to NS North Yard & Norris Yard & CSXT Boyles Yard, at one time the BNSF Transfer took the interchange all the way to Norris Yard in Irondale, Al. but that was changed several years ago & now use North Yard at 32nd Street Interlocking to interchange, NS AB06 job brings the BNSF cut to North Yard from Norris Yard & BNSF brings the NS cut to North Yard from East Thomas Yard, sometimes bringing NS power used as pool power on BNSF, the BNSF Transfer to CSXT also does the same thing when CSXT pool power comes in on a BNSF train the BNSF Transfer to CSXT will bring CSXT power back to them at Boyles Yard

Description:  BNSF Transfer Job Y-BIR104 snakes through the crossovers from NA #1 to NA #3 as they pass through 2nd Avenue in Birminghm, Al. on their way back to East Thomas Yard after interchanging with NS at North Yard, what a fine sight this was to see this GP40X leading the BNSF Transfer, the GP40X is one of my favorite early model locomotives with those flared radiators which remind me of SD45s, which is another one of my favorite locomotives, BNSF has 10 of these GP40Xs numbered 3030 through 6039 & arent commonly seen & when you do see them theyre in local & yard service, when these GP40X's were 1st released into service they were used in intermodal service on the Santa Fe, now they've been demoted to yard & local service, the GP40X is the prototype to the GP50

Back when these GP40X's were released into service on Santa Fe they were in high priority intermodal service, now they've been demoted to yard & local service with all the newer power BNSF has purchased in the last several years, good to still see them in any kind of service at all, better than being scrapped for sure, but we all know they will not last forever, eventually SD40-2's will bump all the 4 axle power off the roster, either sold or leased to other railroads or worse they'll be scrapped.

Description:  BNSF Transfer Job Y-BIR104 passing through 27th Street Interlocking AKA The CSXT Gate in Birmingham Al. on their way back to East Thomas Yard after interchanging with NS at North Yard with a rare GP40X leading the way still in Santa Fe paint, BNSF only has 10 of these GP40Xs on their roster & are rarely seen, especially leading, when Santa Fe took delivery of these GP40Xs they were put into service to haul high priority intermodal trains, now theyve been demoted to yard & local service since BNSF has purchased many newer widecab locomotives over the past several years, Im glad to still see this power in any kind of service these days & hope they have plenty more years left in them for yard & local service
